VICUS DESARROLLOS TECNOLOGICOS S.L. (VICUS DT) is a new and dynamic company committed to Research and Technology in the energy and marine fields. VICUS DT was founded in 2007 in Vigo ( Spain ) by the Emenasa group of companies in order to work with them, or any other partner, in cooperative research projects requiring a core group of high level researchers. The company is mainly focused on technology development, ship propulsion and ship energy efficiency analysis. It is composed of a group of skilled engineers specialised on the most advanced design and analysis tools.

Vicus DT is the optimal technology partner for multidisciplinary innovation projects where complex artefacts are developed and where different engineering fields come into play.

The company has several research lines which can be grouped on three fields:

• * Hydrodynamic Research: Hydrodynamic design and analysis carried out with the most advanced simulation tools (CFD). We search for a new evolution of ship hull forms, rudders and propellers, analysing the interaction among them in order to provide our customers with those combinations giving the highest energy efficiency. Projects in this area include:

•  High efficiency rudder for improved manoeuvrability in tuna purse seiners.

•  Research on new rudder designs for low noise and vibration on board cruise vessels.

•  CENIT BAIP 2020. Research on propulsion and manoeuvring alternatives on longline fishing vessels coupled to hydrodynamic optimization for optimal fuel consumption. In cooperation with El Pardo Towing Tank.

•  Low noise propeller design for patrol/research vessels achieving high efficiency during model testing.

•  WAVECAT 3D. Seakeeping analysis and dynamic response of wave energy devices. Cooperative research project with CIS Galicia, Norvento Enerxía and Universidad de Santiago de Compostela.

• * Mechanical design, structural and thermal analysis : Conceptual design, detail and manufacturing engineering. Finite element method simulation. Our research team guarantees optimised mechanical solutions. Currently, we are dealing with the following projects:

•  WAVECAT 3D. Structural design and analysis of a moored floating structure.

•  Rudder bearing carrier design and analysis.

•  Propeller blade stress calculation.

•  Shaft alignment and whirling calculation are carried out in a regular basis.

• *  Research on innovative electrical machines: Developing new electrical machine concepts tailored to be used as motors or generators for special applications such as marine propulsion, wave energy devices and water turbines. Several patents pending. Research in progress comprise:

•  New water turbine concept optimised for wave energy systems.

•  Special drives for energy efficient ship propulsion and deck machinery with reduced weight/torque ratio.

Furthermore, we are cooperating on the development of an energy and efficiency management system for ships, which is already installed and running on several vessels; we are also working on a new steering gear control system suitable for DP operation.
